In 2008, a 32 GB SSD was again able to win the enormous sum of $800. That’s $600 more than today, and for starters, you get 60 times more data at about five times the speed!

Interface and production developments played a role in this. There is also an oversupply. More and more manufacturers are entering and leaving the market and heavyweights such as Samsung, Micron, Seagate and Western Digital no longer have these kinds of products.

We have seen these well-known manufacturers and before that readers at high prices, which under pressure of the new children in the neighborhood with integrated budget readers have been reduced. The lower part of the price spectrum, which used to be a preservation of the lesser known cheap brands, is permeated by the big brands. When it comes to pricing and purchasing SSDs, this is now a very large market for the customer.

As the performance and capabilities of SSDs improved, their prices fell. This makes a new DSS the best upgrade a user can make. The disadvantage of this explosion in the SSD market is that the number of choices, especially in the field of budget models, can be enormous. Especially if you don’t consider yourself an expert or even someone with moderate experience.

Before deciding whether or not to choose and buy a Vaseky SSD, it is important to explain a little bit about what to look for and for whom it is intended.

Who is it for?

Are you a PC user with basic needs and want to upgrade a standard hard drive on your laptop or desktop computer to something faster? But first you need to know what SSD form factor you need and what it should look like. SSDs are not only conventional 2.5-inch hard drives, but they also have the same size and shape as the 2.5-inch hard drives used in most laptops. Although these drives are still widely used, the forms of SSDs have changed in recent years.

If you’ve recently purchased one of the latest thin laptops, you’ll probably need an M.2 drive in the shape of a chewing gum stick if you want to upgrade it. In addition, the latest generations of desktop PCs and their motherboards usually have slots or slots for M.2 drives. For the increasingly popular 2-in-1 tablets and notebooks, the mini SATA SSD will do the job.

The M.2 and the mini SATA SSDs are, if you like, the thin cousin of an old MLC semiconductor disk. M means multi, i.e. two bits can be stored in each cell. Similarly, recent technological developments have led to TLCs with three or three bits per cell and QLCs with square or four bits.

The reader has several million cells, so TLC or QLC readers with an extra bit in each memory cell can store more data than MLC readers, but use the same amount of silicon. This has reduced production costs, because fewer actual modules are needed to store the same amount of data.

The time for QLC, which will be introduced for the first time in 2018, is even ahead of us. Currently the MTC offers reasonable productivity with lower production costs. This is how most manufacturers ended up at TLC NAND and relied on its reputation. This type of SSD is the current standard for cheap SSDs. And for the majority of users, the productivity of a TLC charger is more than sufficient.

But if you are a creative person or another experienced user who works with large files or data, the TLC (or QLC) drive is probably not for you, especially if you use it all the time. In this case, you will probably have to pay extra for a more expensive MLC drive. And this is the type of disc, in different sizes, that Waseki produces. However, as we will explain, this high price is only relative.

Another feature of TLC flash memories is that they have a shorter lifetime than more conventional MLC flash memories. Just look at the specifications for written terabytes (TBW). This is the total number of terabytes that a disk must be able to write during its lifetime before its cells fail.

Every time your PC starts a recording process, the SSD controller first writes to the new cells. But at some point these unused cells no longer exist and you have to start removing cells that have already been used and write them down. The SSD can repeat this deletion and write to the cell only as many times as needed before the cell fails and can no longer store data. MLC drives require approximately 5,000 write/erase cycles before a cell can no longer function. There are only about 1000 cycles in the TLC.

In general, however, the easiest way to determine exactly what you pay for an SSD, and thus the best way to determine the cost, is to divide the price by the number of gigabytes. For example, an SSD of $50, 240 GB costs 20.8 cents per gigabyte. With a 50,256 GB SSD you get 19.5 cents per gigabyte. Today, the best price for a cheap SSD is about 10 cents per gigabyte. So always think about this price/performance ratio.

What we don’t like about the revision of DSS

Yes, we have established that the installation, quality, reliability, performance and speed are flawless. But it was only a few weeks of testing. For a more in-depth reflection over a longer period of time, do not forget to consult the online magazines.

However, there is no doubt that Vaskey, like almost all low-cost SSD manufacturers, only offers a three-year warranty and no longer offers more expensive high-end models. For example, Samsung gives 850 EVO for five years for its SSD budget model.
