The files you can use on your computer have different formats and you may encounter .zip files regardless of the operating system your computer uses. If you want to save disk space on your computer and if you also need to send them over the Internet, we use compressed files or compressed files as they are called.
Zip files have been around for years, and they’re useful when you’re dealing with a large number of files that you need to transfer to someone by email, or when you want to reduce the actual file size when sharing. You can also open .zip files on the Mac, just like on Windows, and create .zip files by compressing other files.
In this article, we’ll give you an overview of the applications you can use to open and compress .ZIP files on your Mac.
Mac Archiving Utility

The Mac offers its own compression and decompression solution, Archive Utility, which integrates directly with macOS. Not only can you access the file from the Launcher or Spotlight, but you can also compress it directly into an archive format in your Mac’s Finder application. This means that you cannot open a separate application or define summary values.
The Finder’s Archive utility compresses ZIP files by default, leaving files and archives only when they are decompressed or compressed. If you open the archiving program and go to the preferences, you can change these settings. However, you do not get any additional options in the tool for defining the summary rate.
The Archive Utility lets you compress files on your Mac. Select the files you want to compress, right-click or check the files and choose Compress from the context menu. The compressed file is saved with the extension .zip. Double-click to open the compressed files on your Mac. You can also open the archiving program by pressing Command + Space and then press Find Archiving Program and Enter.

The native Mac archiver is fine in most cases, but if you need a little more options when compressing files, you can choose Unarchiver from MacPaw Inc. All common compressed file formats like Zip, RAR, 7-zip, Tar, Gzip and Bzip2, but also older compressed file formats like StuffIt, DiskDoubler, LZH, ARJ and ARC can be opened with this application.
Some Windows .EXE installation programs and some ISO and BIN disk file formats can also be opened using Unarchiver. In addition, the program can detect and correctly manage the encoding of file names to open files correctly without displaying distorted file names. You can also use the application to access password-protected archives and select the appropriate encryption for extra protection.

RAR Extractor is a Mac application that allows you to decompress files in all major archive formats such as Rar, Zip, Tar, 7zip, Gzip, Bzip2, XZ, Tar.gz, bz2, iso, pkg, swf, exe, jar, xip, dms, and more. The program supports opening password-protected archive files and allows multiple archive files to be decompressed at the same time via batch decompression.
If an RAR extraction program is available, simply double-click on the file to safely extract it. Another quick way to extract files is by dragging and dropping them to the RAR extraction software icon in the Dock.
